Digital painting process machine gun concept, Step by step from rough sketch to finished render.

Hi guys, it's been a week since I update some art work or any sketch. I've been busy with the holiday stuff and cooking some code in my little project called "Zodiac Blades." Here are some update for the art on the project. If any of you remembered, the guy had a glove, a flaming hand, then now I decided that it would be a lot easier with the heavy weapon like machine gun. I thought it would be easier for me with the personal project I am going with. The cool thing is, with machine gun, he can easily switch weapon to flame thrower, shotgun, and many heavy different looking kind of weapon. And it will be good for me as an artist to sketch and paint more of a gritty sci-fi genre.

Hopefully there will be more art coming from idrawgirls' kitchen. Now I am really busy learning some code for iphone SDK and Java. It's fun but it's kinda hard for me since I've never done any real coding other than html, xml and java script. Have fun guys, will update more soon. :)

A bit about Batgirl, Batgirl is the name of several fictional characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics, frequently depicted as female counterparts to the superhero Batman. Originally created by Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff, the first incarnation of the character, the "Bat-Girl" Betty Kane, debuted in Batman #139 (1961) as the sidekick to Batwoman. Following the promotion of Julius Schwartz to editor of the Batman-related comic book titles in 1964, the Bat-Girl character was removed from publication (along with Batwoman) and replaced by the "new" Batgirl Barbara Gordon, police commissioner James Gordon's daughter, in 1967. The new character was introduced in Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino's Detective Comics #359, entitled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl".

The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl made regular appearances in DC comics from 1967 to 1988. Draw and paint man anatomy review.

I was doing some study on male anatomy and muscle structure review for myself so that I can somehow apply and improve my painting technique and skill. Anyway, I thought it would be cool if I make it a mere stylize body rather than realistic and still maintain the realistic muscle structure.
Here are some of the video that might help you, go watch Character Design Face Male Merchant Character, or Drawing Male Face Swordman and Learn how to draw and paint face. After you watch these three videos, you should be able to get the idea on constructing a facial structure and stuff.

And the following videos should help you with male anatomy study: Drawing body muscle torso anatomy and Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep I know they are short, but they are very useful for drawing body and muscle.

After I sketch Sue Storm see How to draw Fantastic 4 Susan Storm, I realize how much I like sketching women and figure and sketching alone. And I noticed on the viewers that there are more people watching drawing woman or female video tutorial than a male superhero videos. Almost double viewers in just over the weekend. Well, I guess my site is called "idrawgirls.com" so I guess it only make senses.
OK, the drawing and sketching video lesson of superheroes or heroines will start rolling out more. But the newer ones will be a little more advance or more than just basic line drawing. But again, that depends on how much time I have during the time. Hopefully I can make more better drawing video.
This tutorial, "Emma Frost" sketch, I have to say that it is one of my better ones...I know what direction I want to take when I start. Enjoy the tutorial.

A bit about the character: Emma Grace Frost is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #129 (January 1980), and was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer John Byrne.
An urbane, mutant telepath with a well-noted dry wit. initially known as the White Queen (complete with revealing white attire for which she is known), Frost has changed from one of the X-Men's most dangerous foes to one of its most central members. The character was named IGN Comic's "Hottest Comic Book Babe" in 2005.

Digital Painting Mecha Robot modify work in process. I am trying to put the mech I paint a while back for full feature tutorial in to the scene and make it more presentable rather just a mech stand alone concept.

Hey folks, it's been a little while since I updated, been busy with painting, tutorials, and life stuff. Anyhow,...this post I am putting the figure in the environmental. It usually help bringing out more of its characteristic, and the world they suppose to be in.

Right now I am trying to find the way to get the water to look right. It's kind of tricky. Just a quick update. More are coming up. :)

Figure study painting with light and form high contrast

Figure study painting with light and form high contrast (Chiaroscuro study).

Here another quick painting sketch figure or female anatomy study. I did the previous study Figure Study female form step by step about a week or two ago. This one is a bit different because it didn't focus on the form as much. It's more of creating a form according to the light source or painting from light study. If you notice the higher contrast (Chiaroscuro = light VS dark) within the form, the more interesting the painting become. High contrast lighting set up can create very high visual impact on the figure because your eyes are trying to figure out pieces of puzzle together.

Chiaroscuro itself is Italian, and roughly means, “light and dark.” It was first used to describe a type of drawing on medium-dark paper where the artist created both darker areas with ink and lighter areas with white paint.

Female figures study, some quick drawing and render.

This batch of sketch I did study over female with more muscular figures but still convey the femininity, in other word, they are not too overly buffed up. They are still pretty in the athletic way. And forget those faces in the set, they won't done up. I was doing quick sketches for all and observe the figures. :)
I did these a little while back, I thought I already post them on the site. But apparently I was either getting old or too busy juggling stuffs around and drawing at the same time.

Well, not much time today...I just want to do a quick post.

Learn to Draw sketch and digital paint over a Comics style woman, female samurai or swordsman, girl female character design, sketch, illustration for manga, comics, anime free web step by step and video tutorial.

This new step by step tutorial is a work over the old drawing of mine. It was a drawing tutorial I made a year ago I think. Now I am slowly picking some of the old sketch, drawing or concept that are worthy of going all the way to possibly finish stage using variety of method or style.
It's a good exercise for once in a while you should pick some of your older work and upgrade it or redo it totally (if the idea was great but bad execution). But this rogue samurai sketch is alright to begin with so I am just going to paint over the sketch and take it to the finish line, hopefully.

So basically I am focusing on repaint her face and tighten or clean up the rest of the environmental background.
Also, there is no painting video, just step by step. :) I need to step up a few knots and get better as a painter, most of the time recording can be very distracting. I want to be able to think, analyze, and observe the work without putting in any brush stroke during the course. Which often take as much time as actual painting itself. So... :) Thinking and planing is hard.

It's been a while since I did a sketch tutorial video on woman drawing. Since I've been doing many comics superheroes sketches so I thought I should do the girl's version of video also. My first pick is Susan Storm from Fantastic 4 comics. It was the first American superheroes team comics I read when I was a kid (well, other than Batman, Superman and the Hulk). Anyway enjoy the tutorial.

A bit about character. Susan Storm is the first female superhero created by Marvel in the Silver Age of Comics. She's also known as Invisible Girl and later, Invisible Woman. Susan is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics superheroine created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-writer Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961, and like the other founding members of the Fantastic Four, Sue received her powers after being exposed to a cosmic storm. Her primary power deals with light waves, allowing her to render herself and others invisible. However, she can also project powerful fields of invisible psionic energy which she uses for a variety of offensive and defensive effects.

*She's also an object of infatuation for Doctor Doom, and, most notably, Namor the Sub-Mariner.

I just saw Marvel production trailer of X-men spin off, "Wolverine." It looks really promising, I really hope it will be as good as the trailer because I like the first two x-men movies, but not the third one.

How to draw Woman Comics #005 Marvelgirl, Jean Grey, x-men phoenix Part 1 of 2. Draw and Sketch comics character, woman girl female Marvel girl, x-men Jean Grey illustration sketch. Learn from Step by step and video tutorial. This one is focusing on portrait of female character design for comics, video game, and Manga. The process shows drawing and sketching video series of comic book characters that (hopefully) will help you gain knowledge of anatomy and dynamics in the positioning of the figure and the details.

In this tutorial, I will be adding some dynamic foreshortening in the sketch in part 2. In part 1, I'm focusing pretty much on the facial structure and the pose itself. Then I change my mind on the position of her hand and arm so I change it up and make another video for part 2.

A bit about X-men character, Jean Grey: Jean Grey is a fictional comic book superheroine appearing in books published by Marvel Comics. She has been known under the aliases Marvel Girl and later, Phoenix and Dark Phoenix, and is best known as one of five original members of the X-Men, for her relationship with husband Cyclops, and for her central role and transformation in the classic X-Men storyline, the "Dark Phoenix Saga."

Jean Grey is a mutant born with telepathic and telekinetic powers. Her powers first manifested when she saw her childhood friend being hit by a car. She is a caring, nurturing figure, but she also must deal with being an Omega-level mutant and the physical manifestation of the cosmic Phoenix Force. Zodiac Blades characters concept design update.

This old design is a little more, settle and doesn't really tell much of what this is all about. It doesn't look like fun and it's very static. Most of all, it doesn't engage the viewer into the illustration as I want them to. I know some of you who like the lady, I will put her in some other illustration that I feel more appropriate for her part.

Also, I decide to change the overall theme from fantasy to more of a sci-fi and post apocalyptic steam punk. I've been concepting fantasy for ages so I want to freshen my idea up a bit more. It will make me think differently in term of design and such. More mechanical and clunky design rather than organic and ornate. I also want to design more creepy mutated creatures rather than typical fantasy monster in armors for the Zodiac project.
Since it is no longer fantasy, our hero dude's arm will no longer be magical elemental (fire, ice, and so on). He will man up and hold a big machine gun, pistol and sword instead. And yes, I will have to draw many cool guns from slick to gigantic clunkers. :)

Now, I'm leaning toward the more action pack appearance as I try to engage the viewer more.
Apocalyptic steam punk Sci-Fi cross with a little touch of Far East influence design. Like I said, I'm trying to take myself away from fantasy genre for a while. There will be, hopefully, tons of guns and ammos...and many more greasy hi-tech steam punk manly stuff.
Back to the point that I am trying to make. This illustrates to viewer that he is out to destroy outrages mutated undead creatures. Where do these ugly creatures came from?
Long story... Once in every approximately 2,464 years, Luna Eclipse Zodiacs happen to realign themselves (I totally made that up). Then twelves asteroids will crash on earth...then we have twelve of them boss creatures from outta space. You get the idea. :)

*Still in process, will finish it up soon. And so does the boar mutated creature design I previously posted.*

For those of you who are awaiting for new video tutorial to come, I am running out of idea on what to draw. It's kinda hard to get something record within 20 mins and make them look good. But I just came up with some idea this morning. Possibly, I will just start drawing all the Marvel and DC superhero characters one by one... kind of like this video tutorial, How to draw Batman start with them ladies. Also possibly some Manga or Anime character like How to draw Naruto Anime Manga. And maybe some video game character like the Drawing and Sketching Mech StarCraft Marine video as shown below Been very busy these days, but will keep it up. It's been almost three years on this blog. I am not going anywhere.

A bit about this character, Venom, or the Venom Symbiote, is a fictional character, a symbiote life form in the Marvel Comics universe. The creature is a sentient alien with a gooey, almost liquid-like form. It requires a host, usually human, to bond around for its survival. In return the Venom creature gives its host enhanced powers. In effect, when the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human to form a super-villain, that new dual-life form itself is also often called Venom. The symbiote, with or without a host, is one of Spider-Man's archenemies. Spider-Man was the first host it merged with before its evil motives were clear. After Spider-Man rejected it, the symbiote went on to merge with other hosts and so began its reign as the villain known as Venom.

How to draw comics superhero #002 SpiderMan.

Here is a Spiderman drawing video demo. This one is also a little more stylize or cartoony rather than going the realistic rout. I found, personally, that it's fun to exaggerate or accentuate the figure and make it more to your liking or preference. It's a big different from drawing the Hulk with massive exaggeration of muscle groups (*previous video tutorial, How to draw comics character Hulk .) when I sketch. SpiderMan, on the other hand, is very slim but still rip so it fun to sketch tighter or smaller muscle groups on the figure. They both have very different silhouette, and it's fun to think about it and try to analyze the similarity and different.

And this one is in a typical comics action pose, for those of you who request more of how to draw action poses, here it comes.

It's like I don't have to think much in term of concept, just focus on accuracy of the figure and have fun with the muscle groups. No wonder, many good artists love to draw them. :)

Like I mention on the previous post, I'm doing a video of superhero drawing. So I'm starting of with how to draw comics charater 001, the incredible Hulk. What's not to like about the Hulk. I love the Hulk when I was a kid and remembering watching the re-run TV series.

How to draw Zombie character. This video tutorial is a very basic beginning drawing process I usually start off with, nothing fancy here. But I will keep updating the Zombie goon art work and hopefully take it to the finish color concept sketch.

Here is a Zodiac Boar zombie undead monster update. I have some time on the weekend to work on it tiny little bit. Basically I work on its ferocious face and refine it a bit more. Also decide to take the long tongue out to reveal its lower teeth more and it works out better.

Creature concept step by step Boar Monster Orge Zombie. Have some time to sketch up some creature stuff for the Zodiac project, the Boar undead zombie monster. It's a long story and I will eventually have some explanation later (that is if I can come up with one)

So I decide to go with the year of the boar first because it would be the easiest for me to start or that's what I thought anyway, It turns out not so much...well, I have some sort of vague idea in mind, but I didn't execute it well enough. So this is just a quick throwing idea around sketching to get it off the ground for now. I will probably redesign it later...I kind of want it to be ferocious, mean, but also have some hint of humor at the same time. It seems that it didn't go into that direction. But I will get it...soon. :)

The process of quick concept I did for the boar monster is very similar to How to draw comics Barbarian Warrior video tutorial (recommend to watch) and How to draw comics woman viking warrior video tutorial. I usually try to find values and assign gray scale to the figure first which makes the job a lot more easier if you can get the overall values range, like in this drawing video tutorial How to draw a vampire woman and from there you can assign color in the middle of process then continue on working like in this video example How to draw werewolf creature monster tutorial. Well, I will have to fix this Boar Zombie monster concept for sure. :P

Concept Art Character design male

Concept Art Character design male for my personal fun project update. He is a main hero in my little project but the look on his face says otherwise (Chis has the point on the previous posted comment). He has the look of anti-hero (sort of like a rebellious teenager), so it's not a typical good guy but he is indeed a good guy.

Anyway, I get some time to paint and flesh out on this character, including his Chibi form. The idea is there, but the final design I am not quite please with it totally. Originally, he did have a cape, but I just add it in for illustration impact purpose...cuz it frame the figure nicely. I would later put him in real pose other than static concept (which is what I do all the time :P).

There might be something add to his design later on as I can come up with some fresh idea. But for now here it is.

Here are some tutorial recommendation to watch if you like this character concept. Go watcht these video tutorials on male figure such like Drawing body muscle torso anatomy tutorial. And for arms for male figure watch Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep. These tutorial are basic enough to understand if you have some drawing experience which I assume if you are here then you do draw.

How to draw hand video tutorial learn step by step basic.

Now back to the basic a little bit. I have so many emails, youtube comment, facebook, etc. asking me if I could do a drawing hand tutorial. Well, it's been a long and lots of requests. So here we go, this video is for you guys.

Other than faces (facial expression), hands are probably the second most expressive and intricate part of the human form. So hands in general should receive careful attention.
Aside from the head, they are usually the only other exposed part of the body and can be useful in communicating without verbal. Hands are equally as expressive in gesture, emotion and action. Because of the complexity of joints, masses and planes, along with their expressive nature, the hands can, and usually are, the hardest thing to learn on the entire human form.

But in this tutorial, in my opinion, you don't have to draw every single detail of the hand because as a concept artist or illustrator, you will hardly ever just draw and paint hand by itself. So this tutorial will demonstrate the basic structure and simplified hand drawing. More detail, doesn't necessary means better. The accurate depiction, proportion, and expression without over doing it, to me, is more important than putting a bunch of wrinkles, bumps, etc. Get the hand shape and proportion correct with the minimal use of lines, then you can go ahead and add detail as you please, with thinner line detail.

Also this tutorial, I'm demonstrating form of female's hand. So listen carefully. You have to be precise, clean and make it look as graceful as you possibly could.

The ones in red are construction lines then the one in black are flesh out after the basic shape of the construction lines drawing.

More hand tutorials are probably coming...like male hands, fist, holding object like sword, etc.

Character sketch design young hero type first pass.

Hello, in the pass few weeks I did a few random sketch; such as "Digital art sketch of a female pilot concept", "Character Concept Art process Executioner" and "Female Spartan" (which I didn't post cuz it's not good enough), without having any useful purpose in mind, but they are all fun.

Anyway, recently I just have an idea that strike me to do some short and fun project. It involves a young hero male archetype and the Chinese Zodiac deities as villains. I can't tell you yet what it is going to be until I finish. It will also involve a undead force or zombie army along the line of Drawing tutorial Zombie Ninja character that I previously did.
The thought excited me so much that I have to put it on the number 1 priority list. So you will see tons of sketches and concept that are related to the Chinese Zodiac for the next few months. That will also include environment (same as Concept art painting landscape and Draw and paint landscape technique.) So yeah, 12 evil designs for the Chinese Zodiac sound like a blast to me! I am pretty excited. I will try to record more tutorials as I produce more of them. And if this Zodiac project born to life and finish finish. I was hoping to turn Kapow Express into the same medium.
My plan for the Zodiac project is very simple though it will take six months to take it all the way to the end, that's the projection plan anyway. As for Kapow Express, the storyline is so complex and the core is not very straight forward...it will take a really long time to complete. So I am going to put a break on it until I am finishing with the Zodiac project. Watch out!
I'm sure you will like it about the same though it's not an online comics but it has story and it will be fun!!! Don't worry Chris, there will be Zombies (I promise). Sorry Knuckle, I know you are looking forward to Kapow, but you will love this! I am sure. As for Luca, I know you like everything. :)

Here is the initial sketch for the Zodiac. This is a young hero character that will take an adventure and face all 12 Dark Zodiac deities.

*If you really notice, I cheated...I painted over the previous Female Pilot concept that I did cuz her face draw me in for some reason. I painted over her face and make it more masculine though I want to keep a bit of prettiness in it. And I kinda want this guys face to be rebellious, but also you can help but want to know what he thinks. It's like some kind of mysterious air around his persona. There are still a lot to be done on the rest of the body. (Also I just notice that he wears a sword on the wrong side of the shoulder, blah!)

Same dude as above but here is a chibi form or SD (super deform). Don't worry this is just an initial sketch really quick. I will pretty it up later on. :)

Digital Art technique assign color to gray scale values.

So here is a process update step by step from the last post. In this post, I cleaned up the values on over all figure and give it more light source to the character design. At this stage, I will try to get a clear visual image in big shapes. The tricky part is not to get overly detail too soon on the design, just laying out big shape like underpainting.

Another things to remember at this stage also, when painting, try to stay in the middle range of gray between 30-70, no more, no less.

I am still trying to figure the design out and light source at the same time. But the priority is light source, you will have to try to get it as accurate as possible. Then the design comes after, only if when you are doing a model sheet that you reveal every single detail of the character. As for illustration concept, whatever is in the shadow stay in the shadow. You can show off the detail only in the light. It's tricky and challenging to do. Every time I paint something nowadays, I will try to challenge myself to see if I can push it to the next level from the previous. It doesn't happen every single time, but I usually learn a lot from mistakes.

I also change the post so that it will give the guy more personality.
When apply color using "overlay" layer, do it in the early or mid stage. Make sure the value range of the color you choose stay in middle range (40-60) otherwise it will drastically change your initial gray scale values. And that could throw everything off.

As for the face or head (women, female) Draw girl's face how to lesson video and step by step and learn how to draw face, woman These two are not on the thumbnails above and might be hard to find. Still could be valuable for some people. I did over two years ago, but solid.

Flipped and then work again from here to fix all the proportion and angle.

Female Fighter pilot character concept sketch update.
Have sometimes to work on this female sketch for a little bit lastnight.

So I lay down some nit and bit of color here and there. Also play around with her hair style and colors. Not very happy with the result because it looks a bit unnatural, but it's fine for now. I did added some hard metal gear to her outfit so that it spice the values of the overall uniform a bit more.

Yeah, I took cool advice from some other artist that sometimes if you work on only one piece all the time you will get bored. So if you can, you should work on a few images at time so you get fresh eyes and idea whenever you go back to the previous one. Once you get bore with the current concept or illustration work, go work on couple of new ones, then go back and forth.

Anyway, I will write some more content when I have sometimes, will be back.

First of all, it's been a while. I kind of take some time away and think of what I could do more for this blog that would benefit fellow artists more.
Thanks for all comments and e-mails (again) really appreciate them. Apologize for some that I still did not get to answer, I have been really busy but I am trying to get to them all. Usually I get the blog comment first. :)
Anyway, apart from making art tutorials, there are many questions from many young artists who wants to make a career out of what they love. So I have been thinking that I should very soon post more information on how to break in or basically how to earn a living from doing art work. As you know, I often post job opportunities on my TWITTER feed. So I think that will be a great additional valuable information to this blog. I will come up with more.
And of course I will still be doing tutorials along with it, but I just want this blog to be more valuable than what it's already is. Because it only make sense that once you get to learn how to draw and paint good, then what's next? Do you sit around with it? What can you do with it? I will try my best to fill you in.

Anywho...here is a sketch out of boredom. I haven't touch the previous executioner in a while...so I will leave that to faith whether I would finish that one or not...possibly. :)
Here is a girl sketch since it's been a while. Still unfinished and not refine...just one of those killing time and practice doodle.

Concept art thumbnail sketching process for Character design.

Thought I should do some character concept design process from the beginning to the end. I start this one from really rough line just try to get the silhouette of what I want. I am looking for huge mean guy like the executioner style melee dude. I want to emphasis again that thumbnail sketches are rough drawings, sometimes only comprehensible to the designer, used to explore layout options. These quick pen or pencil sketches allow the designer to try out several ideas and zero in on the most likely layouts before beginning a project.

Creating thumbnail sketches is a crucial part of the brainstorming aspect of your design work. Don't discount the value of this step in the design process.

Since it's been a little while since I did anything from the ground up. So here it is one of the thumbnail character, Executioner.

For this thumbnail sketch, I took it a little further than usual and try to get the composition and basic values for overall sketch to make sure that this is what I really want before I start really fleshing it out. It took me about 15-20 by far, a little longer than I thought.

iPhone game Itemania trailer, cute looking game from a few friends of mine.

A few guys that I know just launched this little game for iphone and ipod touch called "Itemania."
It's a really simple game, cute looking and pretty music. Check it out! :)
Hidden item games are becoming popular earlier 2009 when someone finally got up the energy to draw up a bunch of artwork for it, and there have been quite a few of them over the past number of months.

In itemania, The goal of the game is like any other hidden object game, but finding the objects is slightly different. Some of the levels in the game can be quite challenging. It is not always easy to find the items on the list. Like most hidden object games, there are a few give me items that are really easy to find and a few items that take more time to find.

Itemania's 2D levels are pretty standard fare, but the real gems are in the 3D levels. It also give you the same ability, but of course also let you rotate the scene around a fixed X axis point (left and right), and to a limited degree, you can slide up and down to see the whole scene from every relevant perspective. Putting the whole hidden item genre into a 3D perspective really changes it up more than you might expect.
So it fun! It's for all ages! And it looks great.

Creature Concept design step by step paint over line art. Here we go again, I am digging out some of the sketches that I did and try to give it a better version or finish it up.

This time, it's some sort of giant dragon type of creatures. It doesn't really look like a typical dragon, just a variation of its kind. We do that a lot when we try to concept creatures and see what kind of stuff we can come up with that look different, but not totally far off.

It was totally fun because I haven't really done any creature in long while.

It's still a work in process and hopefully I will finish it up in a couple more sitting or approximately 3 hours of thinking and couple hours of painting. :)

It's been 3 years since the last installment of GuildWars. The Guild Wars team at ArenaNet and I (Mostly them new blood and old blood) have been working really hard to put out one of the BEST MMO ever made!
The production process and everything have change along with many new technology that emerges in the past three years. Guild War 2 will look even BETTER visually, I know so because these guys are working really hard to make everything look beautified!
Gameplay and lots of things are changing to the better and funner direction. You will have to read that from official ArenaNet site or GuildWars2 site for more info. I just art. :)

How to draw comics character HULK

Learn How to draw Comics character The Hulk

Here is another attempt of drawing Hulk. I was having too much fun playing around with drawing and studying muscle groups.

This post contains two videos. :) First video demostrates how to draw and sketch a SuperHero Character Hulk from side view. The video demo shows you a bit of side view male anatomy (arm muscle groups) and dynamics in the positioning of the figure and the details.
Second video is about applying color and paint over. It shows you how digitally color and paint over Hulk drawing. This drawing video demo shows you a bit of essential foundation of digital painting such as values and color on the HULK.

A bit about Hulk, he was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962). The Hulk is cast as the emotional and impulsive alter ego of the withdrawn and reserved physicist Dr. Bruce Banner. The Hulk appears shortly after Banner is accidentally exposed to the blast of a test detonation of a gamma bomb he invented. Subsequently, Banner will involuntarily transform into the Hulk, depicted as a giant, raging, humanoid monster, leading to extreme complications in Banner's life. Lee said the Hulk's creation was inspired by a combination of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein.

Bounce light or Under lighting experiment and painting around.

I thought I finished the "Agent Pink" (Anime girl) since the last post, but I could not help looking back at the piece I did prior to this "Rogue Sword" aka Samurai girl here Digital painting process character. Then I thought how would I make it at least up to the par or could it possibly be better in term of artistic execution.
So I had to repaint the "Agent Pink" and it take me a while to figure out how to turn this one in to something that is NOT realistic looking but a good looking piece.
So I start playing around and give it under lighting or bounce light, changing the background color, then everything sort of comes together in the end. Then I really like how the bounce light I painted turn out, especially on her green form fitting suit. Then I struggle with the face so I thought I changed her expression and it works! It takes a lot of experimenting, thinking and time. You can go watch video and step by step process draw and color Anime girl step by step on the previous post.

Bounce light by definition
Light bounced into a reflective surface (a wall, a ceiling, a studio umbrella, a card) to illuminate a subject with softer light, reducing harsh shadows. The color of the reflective surface will determine the color of the light bounced into the subject.
Bounce lighting can also be created by reflecting light off a ceiling or an reflective floor. Given that bounce lighting can only work through reflection, it also, by definition, tends to be used in more confined, smaller areas where such reflection is possible. Larger areas can’t trap light as well and, therefore, are not the best spaces for it to be utilized.

Bounce lighting is a form of ambient light because, like ambient light, bounce light indirectly illuminates the central object. Not only does it create a more natural feel to a scene, but it also lends a degree of warmth and serenity to the picture.

Figure study female form step by step process

Figure study female form step by step process.

It's been a while since I did painting study of female figure. So I decided to do one or maybe a few quick figure painting study of a female body form. It was kind of rusty to begin with, struggle in the middle since it's been a long while. But after a couple hours in, it seems a bit easier but the result comes very close to what I want. I just want to study simple form of painting, not really going for the all the way realistic approach.
Note to take on this one is that, I should have established more edges to get the image looks really painterly and smooth.
I should try again soon.
I start off with drawing or sketch to constructed the shape and form where I will be painting over. I am looking for the post that are interesting enough to look at rather than static. Then I use soft edge round brush to establish values then skin-tone for the figure. As it progress, the softer look become more define using hard edge round brush. I hardly use any custom brush on this one, it's just a study to sharpen my skill on figure painting.

Here is a final version of color concept Green dragon. Yeah, if any of you guys remember I had the sketch over a year ago along with the video tutorial of how to draw this guy. You can go watch it here creature concept design step by step (I embedded the drawing video along with the last post). And I think during that time I made a few more video about drawing creature...there are how to draw and sketch dragon head, this is one of my favorite design I did. Ah... How to draw creature monster creature (this one has a unique head, sort of like a lion in the way). I know it's been almost a week since I update any drawing or painting...been busy with the Manga comics. And of course work at ArenaNet :)

Mecha Mega Robot update almost done!

Mecha Mega Robot update almost done!

Here is the 4th of the Mecha MEGA Robot visual character concept art process UPDATE (there are previously posted of part 1: Mecha Robot step by step drawing, part2 Painting Mech process tutorial and part 3 Giant Robot drawing and painting process). I try as much as I can to finish it up this weekend but unfortunately...I can only find a few hours to play with it. I amped up the Machine gun, changed and tweak the design a little bit on the bottome half. It's been a really fun session creating mech since I haven't really done a full launched Mecha in a long while. A few more painted session then I think I will call it done.

ART tips: Talent is often overrated, and often deceive you. Whether you have it or not, forget that it's there. Practice, practice, and practice is only one sure way I know will make me the better artist.

Draw and color anime girl step by step process another attempt!

My last attempt to revive the old drawing of Anime looking character was not so successful. So I take a different direction. I am looking at a simpler and going with a fewer values.

Because of last time I try to maintain the simple anime face and try to render everything else out...it clashed. Now, I am doing less but adding more of other element instead like designs, costume and such. It works out better than last time so it looks like I will be able to finish it in a couple sessions. It takes a lot of thinking than I think it would. Since I am doing the realistic render/ painting concept at work all day. It's a little tricky to switch the mentality and simplify and make good looking cartoon.

I clean up her skin tone on the chest area, I figured it doesn't need that many values as I previously painted. Sometimes it's necessary to scale back the value range and keep it simple for the sake making it looks better. :)
I change the leather color to white because white make it look more futuristic/ sci-fi and that what I am going for in this one. Brown leather color usually goes well with fantasy, western, etc.

I think I am going to call it done here for now then go work on something else. I might have some idea to go further after that. But for now here it is :P

It's been sometimes, I have been trying to do good drawing or painting in the past couple of days...it didn't turn out...but tonight possibly I am determine to make the better one than the last Digital painting video tutorial Court Lady, or at least up to the same par.

Anyway, it's KAPOW EXPRESS time.
Previously on Kapow: Cheng, Bing Bing, and unconcious Mei ran into the strangely quiet village. They see nobody in town. Apparently, the red lantern OLD lady showed up...and it accidentally scared them. Mei woke up wondering where she is. The kung fu kids are looking for lodge and food, but seems no one can offer them in this town. Here is what happen next:

Digital Painting Process Rogue Samurai Swordsman Update.

Here is an update on the image I worked on for fun. I notice something I should mention. Usually the first half hour of painting is more like a warm up for me, so does in drawing. During the time, things usually but not always don't come together as well as I expect.
But things started to pieces together after that, it is usually goes really well when I have about an hour in and then taper off after a few hours.
So currently I spend the first half hour doodling and studying on other image as a warm up before I start painting the project that I left off mid way. I found it gives me better result instead of jumping in right away without warming up. I notice that in life drawing also, I usually have to spend about 15 minutes struggling to get where I think I should be. Another tip is that I could work on a few images at the same time, then alternate them as I feel like what I want to work on at times. This way you won't get sick of just working on one image. On the plus side, you could found some idea while working on environment for your character concept or the other way around.

Drawing tutorial Zombie Ninja character design. Well, the last post I did about the first edition of drawing the color sketch zombie ninja (see Manga tutorial drawing zombie ninja it also include many of ninja drawing tutorial links.)didn't really fit what I had in mind. It came out like a sub-par quality which is kind of disappointing. So I did another quick character design again last night. Most of the important elements of the character I keep, like the goggles, darts, pants (almost Hakama like), etc. This time it is creepier, darker and more menacing. Just like what I actually want the character to be.

If you are a beginner, look for more video tutorial on male body, anotomy and such go watch Drawing body muscle torso anatomy tutorial. And Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep There will also be some basic include there. Then you could try out the following tutorial.

Anyway, here is my revenge on my own drawing. ANOTHER version (better) of the same character. I am going to name him "Kenishi" and for sure he will be in Kapow Express. Yes, there will be some Japanese Empire army involve because the time line fall into WWII in the Pacific. But I am not sure why is there a zombie ninja. You will have to follow the Manga comics, ha ha.

Drawing Anime Girl tutorial quick sketching process
A BASIC tutorial on drawing a girl in the manga anime style, this time focusing on simple drawing and coloring techniques.

I thought I haven't really done clean vibrant Anime/Manga stylize influence in a while...so I just sketched up one last night. First I was going for the high key but then the colors and values kind of sway me so I change my mind to keep it at mid key somehow. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Here is a couple hi-key color tutorials Anime Tutorial How to draw and color (This one with light blue color schemes and leaning more toward color scheme.), Draw Anime Girl (This one uses complimentary color schemes Blue and Orange very subdue and bright at the same time) and Draw and Color Comics woman (This is off blue to green with complimentary peachy skin tone.) Art tips: If you want to be a superb artist, always have a sketchbook at all times. Doodle, scribble, sketch. Play with shapes and lines. Nothing intense, just silly scribbling. You could even do it while watching your TV.

Sketching background for Manga comics process.

There are some request on the subject of the interior background tutorial for comics, manga, and concept. I will admit that it is not really my cup of tea, it took me longer than it should. But I gave it a shot anyway since I have to do a few for the coming panel for Manga comics Kapow Express.

Comes to think about it, I haven't done much of the setting tutorial like interior of a building or corridor. Most of the environment tutorial I did was mostly landscape and concept art landscape tutorial (painting Magma river concept), also this one is a little more basic draw and paint landscape technique (mountains, water, sunset theme). One more here is drawing and painting landscape (WaterFall), How to draw and paint snow rocky mountain scenery. The one that I felt it's similar to anything interior or building is Cityscape Environmental tutorials.

Anyway, I hope to do more quick interior or set stuff soon. And hopefully I will get faster at them so I can understand them more and record a video tutorial. But for now, they are just step by step images

Painting over my old anime girl drawing process, girl with guns!

This one sketch and quick color of Anime Girl I did a couple years back. And I thought it is a good time to kind of revive and paint over and see what I could come up with.
There is something about this color sketch even though it's neither finished nor anatomically 100% correct. It has something that I am fond of, could not pin point what it is.

I really have a hard time repainting and reimagining the image as it exist. The process goes really slow, I am struggling to make it look better overall. I could not resist trying to make the face become a little more realistic or render it out. But every time (I did a few versions) I paint over the face, it lost its originality or its identity. Plus, none of them looks as charming. So I decided to leave the face as is for now.

Here are step by step of what I did with it

Grrrrr.......no so happy here yet. Still to be continued.

I wasn't really happy with the result of what I've done to it so far, but there are some elements that I think worth keep working on and spend a few more hours exploring. I might be able to turn this sinking ship around. I'm thinking using the character's proportion and shape from the 2nd panel with the latest version of the scene possibly.

Anyhow, this one went on the wrong direction so I did another one which is more of what I am looking for here draw and color Anime girl step by step.

Online Comics Kung Fu Comedy crazy cool Kapow Express panels update again.

Ok, I decided to update again replace the half with the whole page of Kapow Express. :)

Just a few panels I quickly color sketch them out... cuz I figure most of you (if you are paying any attention to the comics.) would want to know what happen next. And believe me, so do I. I wish I could draw and paint faster than I am now. It would be nice if I could draw and paint panels as fast as I come up with the story and such.

Separate line drawing layer in Photoshop from scanned drawing, tips for artist.

Separating lines from scanned drawing in Photoshop, tips for artist.

This technique you won't need to set the layer with the lines to multiply and you'll be able to change colors to the lines very easy later on. Very useful when you want to do comics book with outlines style and anime with outlines. Especially if you have a solid black ink drawing your art will turn out sharp and clean!

I receive this suggestion from e-mail from a fellow artist so all the credits go to him.

1.Select the layer with the lines (make sure the whole layer background has a color "whatever color" or just the corners).

2.Ctrl+A to select the whole layer.

3.Ctrl+C to copy the layer.

4.Alt+click on the layer mask to edit it.

5.Ctrl+V to paste the image there.

6.Ctrl+I to inverse the colours of the image on the layer mask.

7.Now Click on the normal Layer to edir the original image with the lines.

8.Select all and Delete the whole layer.

9.Now paint bucket the whole layer with black.

***Also you guys can make an action buttons for any of the technique. Then when you have to do it again you just click the button without having to go through the whole thing over again.

And there you go... Paint anything under the layer with the lines without havint to set it to multiply.
And if you want to paint the lines just paint on the black layer where the lines were originaly.

You can also make a copy layer with all the colours of the drawing, Gausian blur it around 10 or more, make a layer on top with a dark hot color, color burn it for 80% opacity something like that, merge it...
copy it... paste on top of the layer that had the lines once... and merge it down .. hit preserve :)... and there you go lines with similar colors of the drowing but darker... can always get darker~to~black with the burn tool ;p

Here is another character villain character. This guys is extremely genius like a mad scientist for the Japanese Empire WWII military special ops called "Midnight Blood". It's secret operation station on the quiet town right next to HangZhou before the war actually start. He came in the rank of "Shōshō" or "Major-General."
Yeah I know the comics is getting complicated and possibly interesting than you think right?

In this tutorial, the study I was doing is leaning toward Asian male type. How to color a comic panel process tutorial step by step.

Here is one of my favorite panel from the last update. An old lady with lantern, this one came out the way I really want the whole chapter to turn out, but it's most likely impossible. I like how the lighting in this particular panel turns out personally.
As when I do comic or Manga (color) panel, it requires quick way to finish (unlike illustration), not to the point of perfection but readability so that we can move on to the next panel and make the story flow.

Anyway, in this particular one I sketch out an image on a paper (a page in my sketchbook), then I scan it in and the process is as simple as down below step by step. Enjoy!

Web comics "Kapow Express" is back from the break! what?

I know I know, it's been a while since I update the last Kapow panels. I am hoping to keep going at the same pace it was once a week. Previously, Mei was crushed by the powerful Manchu Captain Big Bow in the battle at the noodle house. Then quickly Bing Bing threw smoke bomb distracting the bad guys. Cheng and Bing Bing is now running away and taking injured Mei out of the harm's way. They ran thru some forrest outside Hang Zhou and now in the next little town (village). The town is strangely quiet. What will happen next? I don't know....yet.

It's getting DARK!

This one is basically a new character design for my Manga comics Kapow Express. I am sure some of you are looking forward to some zombies kungfu action and/or chinese zombies and such. Anyway, here is a sneak peak of one of the Zombie character. The zombie army will come soon, or at least I hope so.

Giant Robot drawing and painting MEGA Mech Saga continue.

Here is the 3rd update of the Mecha robot concept design process (here is part 1: Mecha Robot step by step drawing and part2 Painting Mech process tutorial). I get about 30 mins to an hour a day to do this...little by little. Hopefully it will turn out nicely.

Here is the latest UPDATE!!! (Still more paint over and tweaking to do! :P)

Note on the update: I decided yellow probably isn't going to work in this design because I want a little more dramatic lighting effect for this particular drawing, painting, color concept design. So I will have to go with the off-white color (white to light gray). White would probably look slicker anyway in this particular design (kinda remind us of big airplane and such).
I will have to change it from yellow to gray or something similar.
Goto: Top menu in PS --> Layer --> New Adjustment Layer --> Color Balance

You can use this tool to change and tweak your lighting however you like them to be.
Good rule to go by is...Cool light warm shadow vs Warm light cool shadow (Tips here -Color temperature warm vs cool for artist).
So I adjust Midtone then Highlight and Shadows until I get the yellow to change to off white color. Because I want to make underlight more dramatic that why I choose to go with the new color for the Mecha robot.

-Then, I decide to add the pilot cockpit onto its mid-section, figure it would make sense and it would definitely show the scale of the robot that we (human) can related to.
-Also I get a rid of the regtangular shapes on its shoulder. Because there is only one (two vents) regtangular element and the rest of the design are mostly round. So I decided to round it out with some sort of turbine jet engine look alike for vents to maintain the repetitive shape (consistency in design). ***there are some exceptions sometimes***

After all the changes, I think it looks a lot better and closer to what I am aiming for. **The off-white really does bring out the blue sky and the under-lighting effect :)

Painting Mech Robot process tutorial continue still work in process.

From the very sketchy thumbnail composition last time, now I am going to the stage of what we usually called under-painting. At this stage, I am just focusing on the BIG shapes or the big elements of the Mech Concept's geometry form (forget the tiny bitty little detail for now). Focus on the main shape of the object and the direction of the light. And if there is under lighting, look out for that too. Also keep in mind what kind of material the concept design composed of such as metal (*video tutorial sample: art tutorial knight metal armor), gold (art tutorial painting gold color), rubber and such.
As for this image, I am shooting for finished shiny yellow color coat over metal, similar to somewhat like a yellow sport car or something of that sort. But nothing is set in stone at this point, since now I have to overall shape paint...I can still tweak the material or some of the pose if I need to (thanks to digital painting).
**I'm still not sure about the machine gun hand direction. The way it's position is more like a soldier holding an machine gun rather than the actual Mecha would hold it's own machine gun hand.

Mecha robot step by step drawing and painting tutorial.

Since I haven't really done any Mech Mecha or Robot concept sketch in a while. I think it's about time. Since most of the earlier stuff on the blog are really quick, rough and sketchy, especially most of the mech sketches. Like some of the previous video tutorials, "Drawing Mech or Mecha Tutorial", "Concept tutorial Drawing Giant Mech" or "Digital drawing tutorial Mech soldier". This time I decide to give it a little more time to make it more refine concept to it. But it will take a while. So here are step by step I start from initial sketch idea.

As for the pose, it's very generic since most conceptual intend is to be able to see or expose visually it's appearance. Maybe in a later ones, I will try to do more of a cinematic composition or visual story panel style...so that they will be more action and interesting pose.

Limited color palettes study step by step.

Here is another study I did using limited color palettes ref after one of John Singer Sargent painting. Like the previous post, except this one is a little harder because of the drape, folding, costume and deco stuff.

In this exercise, I am not trying to copy it to be exact replica of his masterpiece (it's beyond my ability of course). I am just looking to capture and understand "VALUES" (light) and "Colors" and try to see it thru what Sargent could possibly see. I am sure I will probably do more and more of the study because it is really fun.

Again, this is a quick study so I limited myself to spend around 25-30 mins for the session so that I can understand the overall big picture trying to photocopy the master.

Tutorial Painting limited color palette study step by step and video

Many great artists who has been doing lots of painting (digitally and traditionally) recommended that we as artists should study limited color palettes. Why?
It's kinda like what we can learn from monochromatic and achromatic study as a tool to try to master or practice values.

Here we learn how to utilize colors and values together with limited palette.
By limiting the number of colors you use, you get to truly know the characteristics of each and are able to use it to its full potential. Because Color is fundamental to painting yet it's easy to be seduced by it and never truly master it. Though you can mix them limited choices of these small number of colors so it doesn't really mean you're severely limited in the colors you can produce.

On this particular study I am after one of Sargent's painting for the purpose of learning after one of my most favorite painters. Trying to mimic the color and values after any masters is one of the best way to learn intuitively and trying to figure out yourself how does it get that result and possibly learning repetitively will help you learn the unspoken lesson from the painting.

Keep in mind that in this exercise, I am not trying to copy it to be exact...or trying to achieve the exact likeness of his masterpiece (it's impossible :P ). I am just looking for mainly studying "VALUES" (light) and "Colors" So basically it's my goal to make this as a quick study of how he capture the light and how he apply or achieve the strokes resulting in the painting.
I limited myself to spend around 25 mins for the study session. So that it will make me more decisive and focus just like in life session.

I still have a lot to learn so I will probably keep doing the study for maybe (not promise), a few week or so...then get back to my regular routines. Hopefully there are many things that I learn from the process then I really hope to utilize them into my own painting process. And then I will keep continue this master copy study as part of my regular routine. :)

Painting from life session step by step process. This is half way through...don't know if I could finish it like I wanted to.

Portrait painting from life session last night, 3 hrs (unfinished). Forgot how hard it is to do it from life. I have not been to life drawing session in a while. I used to go at least twice a week (three to four hours on each session, gesture, sketches, paintings) back when I have lots of free time. I did that for at least four to five year even when I already have a good art career going. The point is, I believe, I can never get sick or done of learning. Drawing, painting has always be continuous learning experience for me. The imitation of realism practice or create something beautiful that mimic realism...or life. Like conceptual art, environmental, character, landscape and so on.... We all have to study it from real subject as our best option. Reference photo comes into play as convenience and useful. But live subject is undeniably best to practice from.

I should have also study more perspective. Well, I am still learning more and more then hopefully I will get faster and better and environmental as well.

Here are the process of the painting I did from the life painting session lastnight.
It takes me the total of 3 hours so far. To be continue next week session.
NOTE: the rest of her body is still very scribbly, I wasn't able to get it done in time so... :)

The painting was done digitally on my laptop and wacom on my lap. It was kinda awkward sitting up on the bench, but I pull it thru. I used Photoshop because I was too lazy to set up the old painting tool...and some of the tool are not well prepare since I have not paint in oil in a long while. So I go with the easy tool... :) And no mass.

*If I have some time, I will have some text accompany the images but as of now...you can just take a look and guess or analyze what I did. Enjoy...

Female Warrior concept illustration character design update

Female Warrior concept illustration character design update.

I have some time to work on the piece again this weekend, it's almost there...
Well, the whole piece is now kind of set, but I will still have to do some clean up and simplify the overall image a bit more. Then, if possible I might do some light tweaking to make it more dramatic. Also I will have to polish her metal armor (*check out video tutorial of similar process art tutorial draw and paint knight armor metal and art tutorial draw and paint gold armor ) a little bit more. But for now I am going to leave it for a couple days. Look away, then come back to take a final look at it and see if there is anything I can do to make this look better.
Also I might have to refine her hair (*See video how to draw render hairand how to draw and render female lips) a little more and clean up her face (How to draw a woman face 3/4, learn how to paint face portrait). Possibly add some definition to her right arm muscle (drawing body muscle tutorial.)

Character concept design process Female Warrior

Character concept design process Female Warrior work in process.
Here is a small update for the illustration project I am still painting...working on it for a few hours after the last post "Character concept art Female Warrior" work in process.

I rearranged her facial structure a bit, add more features, clean up, then hair, shoulder pad and chest and breasts area. This are still just arrangement to get the overall values and get the idea of how the final lighting will be for her figure.

Also add some nasty sharp spiky teeth to the hammer head

I will still have to paint over for highlights and darkest dark, then clean up the image and then...hopefully it will all be done by early next week.

So far I did tighten up the very far end background, mid-ground by add some icy snow into it to create somewhat unworldly look into the image. Lava and ice...the are sometimes seen together side by side, but we rarely get to see them. I do have a few video tutorials on the subject there are concept art tutorial painting landscape (Lava, Magma) and environmental concept tutorial ice-snow-scape. You can check them out to get the idea

Also change her face direction from front view to 3/4 view to make her torso or body flow naturally into "C" or "S" arch...works. *If you want to learn how to draw and paint face good there are "How to draw faces" and "How to paint portraits" It also create a little more mysterious element into the image by her looking off to the side suggest that there is another whole world outthere. Hammer head is almost there, still some of the little top flat area to be figuring out and paint over. Also rearrange some of the values on her overall armor (You can also check out video tutorial of similar process art tutorial draw and paint knight armor metal and art tutorial draw and paint gold armor , prep it for the final rendering or painting.

Then fix some problematic area on her right knees (still tweaking) The front guard doggie also change to have the lower body turn the other way so it would create a natural flow because it was almost create a tension with the bottom end of the hammer head (too close) on the previous one. I am trying to get the overall look and feel of the image to be close to the creature concept painting tutorial that I did a while back, except more refine and finished.

Though I am going to make it a bit more blue...the ice, snow and sky still kind of mute compare to the fire...we will see if it will fit. Aha and there shall be some special FX of the hammer and the dogs.

Zoom in on the Hammer, if you look closely...there are just a bunch of brush strokes and scribble. But zoom out as the image above, it looks just fine and make the illusion as 3D object hammer.
