Concept artists VS Illustrators, what make them differ

Labels:

I just found a really good article today. I thought about it accumulate some thinking write some stuff and thought I would share it with you guys.

The line often blur half of the time between being a Concept artist and an illustrator.
Good illustration doesn't make it a good concept art piece to solve the puzzle.
Likewise, great concept art piece doesn't make it a decent illustration either.
So what make them differ?
What define concept art?
What define Illustration?

Concept Artist vs. Illustrator

Concept Art define:
Concept art is a form of (rough or detail) illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in movies, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product. Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design.
A concept artist is an individual who generates a visual design for an item, character, or area that does not yet exist. This includes, but is not limited to, film production, animation production and more recently video game production. A concept artist may be required for nothing more than preliminary artwork, or may be required to be part of a creative team until a project reaches fruition. While it is necessary to have the skills of a fine artist, a concept artist must also be able to work to strict deadlines in the capacity of a graphic designer. Interpretation of ideas and how they are realised is where the concept artist's individual creativity is most evident, as subject matter is often beyond their control.
Term of concept art is base on reference to preproduction design is ambiguous at best, but it may have come about as part of automotive design or as part of the animation industry. Certainly, both industries had need for people who did this job even if the term had not come into use.

Illustration:
An illustration is a visualization such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate textual information (such as a story, poem or newspaper article) by providing a visual representation.
An illustrator is a graphic artist who specializes in enhancing writing by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, or the illustration may be intended for entertainment, as in greeting cards, or cover art or interior art for books and magazines, or for advertisement, as on posters.

In the game industry and elsewhere, there is a position called "concept artist". The job responsibility for a concept artist is to communicate to the development team what the game will look like. It is a simple task to define, but there are few people who excel at it. Even worse, most people who are hiring or working with concept artists don't really understand what makes good concept art.

The root of this problem is that most people do not understand the difference between a piece of concept art and an illustration. Yes, they are both static, graphic depictions of something. But the difference in intent could not be larger.

An illustration is an end in itself. It is meant to be presented directly to the final audience. The audience is meant to see an illustration, and come away with a certain feeling or understanding of a visual event. This directly implies a hard division between what is and is not important in illustrative work.

It is important that an illustration be attractive. It must use color and shading in a way that evokes the desired response in the audience. It should been constructed so that line weight and spatial contrast work to convey certain feelings about the different portions of the drawing.

Manga Friday Kapow Express Chapter 2 page 2.2 is HERE!

Kapow Express Chapter 2 page 2.2 :)

Sorry, guys. I've been sick on and off for a couple weeks. The weather in Seattle can't decide whether or not it will be Winter, Spring, or Summer...it's been chaotic. And my body can't decide if it's well or not...but I do try to run about 2 miles every morning...that doesn't really help recently with all the flu going around. Apparently I found out the hard way that I am not invincible :)

I know it's a bit confusing and it's long been await but I am trying to find the way to compromise between making the tutorial and comics. I've been thinking about making better panel art and make tutorial along with it...which is an interest idea, but then sometimes I feel like doing environment and the panel is about character according to the script...so it get confuse with myself because I usually do the tutorial however I wanted and it's what I feel like doing at the moment.

Anyway, I am going to give the idea a shot, but not promising if it will turn out to be the way that the blog will run. I am just everywhere and I usually follow my mind at time when doing blog because there is no boss, no obligation (well, not really), and tons of freedom. The only constraint is that I have to update regularly which is good for me...practice and consistency and motivating myself. Well, that's it. :)

Anyway here is Kapow Express chapter 2 the end of page2

Here is a quick environmental concept sketch tutorial I did last night. Like always it's easier to scribble out values sketch before deciding on color, digital or traditional. But digital has more flexibility because when you mess up, you can always go back and do some tweak or paint over.
Here is a concept sketch of a beach with some kind of black crystal granite and if you notice closely on the final image, you will see a warlock on top of the big black crystal granite.

Here is a final sketch of the environmental concept: Black Crystal Granite

This will change how local or inhome multiplayer games are played.”

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. IS THIS ONE OF YOUR DREAM GADGETs? It's certainly one of mine, but we will see how it performs when it actually out for the consumers like us to test drive!!!

The new Vuzix iWear AV920-C personal video display is expected to be available later this month but no words on its price yet.

I know the article is not about art but I thought it is some how related to most of what artists nowadays do (Movies, videogames, media, comisc etc. that's what we all in for so...it's good to keep up with the technology.) :)

Colors vs Values artist's tip and technique in digital illustration

Colors vs Values artist's tip and technique in digital illustration

Here's an excerpt from what Craig Mullins (Master Painter) says on the matter of values:

"Decide what is in light and what is in shadow and don’t mix them up. Think like a comic artist. Two values, but if they are well thought out and designed and drawn they can look totally real. Think like that, but instead of making the light white and the shadow black, make the light a 7 and the shadow a 3. Then go ahead and use 5-10 in the light and 1-3 in the shadow to pull out sub forms. DO NOT use 1-5 in any part of the light, or use 5-10 in any areas of the dark. Keep you edges a little softer in the shadows, a little sharper in the light, you are done. (0 is black, 10 is white) Deciding what is in shadow and light for a particular object is pretty hard in words. I will leave that up to you and that is 99 percent of the struggle."

"Hierarchal significance for any color: 1. Value 2. Saturation 3. Hue" -Craig Mullins

Observations, experiments and rants on the production and practice of digital art. The open notebooks of Joseph Francis. Artists struggle over getting correct colors, yet often neglect to get correct values, in spite of the fact that of the two, values are more important than colors at revealing an object's form.

Notice in this image demonstrates if the values are distorted or wrong,
then you cannot even tell what is the picture really is (roll #3 the 2nd pic).
On the other hand, if the value is correct no matter what color you paint in
the shape and readability most likely will maintain ( roll #2, 3rd pic)

Drawing to Painting transition Mass drawing method

Labels:

How to transition you drawing style into painting.
A lot of people having a hard time transitioning from drawing into painting.
I can really understand because drawing and painting to me use different mentality to execute.

* Drawing (verb) is the act of making marks on a surface so as to create an image, form or shape. Mostly using define lines.
* The produced image is also called a drawing (noun). A quick, unrefined drawing may be defined as a sketch.

In simplistic terms, drawing is distinct from painting, perhaps more so in the Western view. Drawing is generally concerned with the marking of lines and areas of tone onto paper. The term drawing suggests a process and intent that is distinct from the traditional act of painting. While there are drawings that are finished artworks, drawing is often exploratory, with considerable emphasis on observation, problem solving and composition, often as a means of preparation for a painting. In contrast, traditional painting is often a means of execution or finishing an artwork. It is fair to note that modern painters often incorporate methods of drawing in their painting process, particularly in the early stages of a painting.

There is a particular type of drawing that will get you closer to the painterly result and will help you translate your pencil mark into analytical thinking method of painters.
Mass drawing refers to rendering the solidity of the subject by masses of tone or color, without emphasizing lines or edges.

Mass drawing in monochrome oil paint is one of the transitional steps from drawing to painting. The purpose of mass drawing is to bring students “from simple outlines to approach the full realization of form in all the complexity of light and shade.”

In this demonstration, four logical steps by Horold Speed:

Step 1. The blocking in of various areas in charcoal.
Step 2. Middletone block-in with lights painted into it
Step 3. Shadows added with dark paint.
Step 4. Refinement and completion.

Painterly approach in painting, illustration, and digital painting

Painterly approach in painting, illustration, and digital painting

Virgil writes:
The "painterly" approach was originally an incidental effect most common in sketches and studies, the sole purpose of which was to help the artist solve some of the problems in the execution of a more refined painting. Titian and Rembrandt became more "painterly" in their later years, when deteriorating eyesight may have hidden the irregularities from them (one hypothesis). Franz Hals painted a number of paintings in the sketch style, probably for his own amusement and/or to cover his bar tab or whatever. He was capable of more refined painting, as is evident in most of his more important commissioned portraits, but employed the faster "alla prima" approach for painting more light-hearted subjects; probably his friends or interesting subjects encountered at the tavern, where no one was likely to pose for very long.
Bouguereau has been falsely characterized as disguising his brushstrokes, but his brushwork is actually visible from up close. In reproductions the strokes do not show, because the paintings are generally large, with the main figures life-size, and the brushstrokes are small. He also used palette knife very expertly for certain effects, especially in the vegetation and other parts of the background, but generally did not employ impasto.

The 'painterly' style became more popular with John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and Joaquín Sorolla. Sargent actually worked very hard to achieve the effect that he had dashed the picture off effortlessly and accurately all at once. Many passages were scraped out and repainted over and over again until the desired appearance was accomplished. There is a certain charm in this type of painting, but its effectiveness depends on the values and colors being registered extremely accurately, or the result just looks sloppy. Sargent's eye was precise enough to make it work. Ironically, he expressed regret, late in life, that he had not carried his paintings to a higher degree of finish. The main trick to painting in this manner is to work fast, with large hog- bristle brushes and large amounts of paint available on the palette. palette knife can also be used for certain effects. A somewhat rougher texture canvas works best for this technique, in my experience. Some subjects are more suited for this approach than others. It is well for artists to be able to paint in more than one manner, and to choose whichever technique best suits the subject at hand.

Regarding impasto highlights, the reason for this is to ensure that they remain opaque far into the future. Oil paint becomes more transparent as it ages, and the thinner the paint, the more transparent it will become. Highlights must be opaque in order to reflect the light which strikes them in the same way as it would reflect from the surface depicted.'

In the illustration era, in my opinion, Frank Frazetta's work is very close to painterly approach, though sometimes the dramatic lighting remind me of Bouguereau.

As the 21th century approach, the influence of painterly approach becomes really popular among the great living master digital concept artist painters such as Craig Mullins, Ryan Church, Nicolas Bouvier, David Levy and many more.
These guys open my eyes to the new world of painting and creating digital art process, thanks to the internet.

Here is PDF downloadable file Sargent Notes on Painting (9 pages) thanks to Craig Mullins.
Good useful info for you guys. :)

Also there are contemporary great traditional master painters who are still doing their masterpiece on oil to rock the 21th century using the same approach along the line of Sargent. They are also my most favorite, you have to check out their work. These master painters are Richard Schmidt, Jeremy Lipking, and Scott Burdick. There are actually many more, but these are on top of my head at the moment.

On that note, I am in love with very loose painterly effect, they create. Painterly approach is not like a totally finished tight illustration (every square inch has to be perfect and controled). On the contrary, it seems (sometimes unfinished, loose yet as the artist intended...no more, no less), to me at least, the strokes of paints dancing around the canvas (also digital) as if they are happy to live. And there is no need for any more strokes. *Thus, the artist intend to finish it that way.
Just some thought I've in mind and knowledge I want to spread from what I see, hear and learn during the period of the moment.

Let me know what you think and what I should add, I hope you learn something and I am expecting to learn more from you guys.

Peace
