What's Matte Painting ? How does it work and digital matte paiting?

Well, matte painting is not what I do, but I thought you should know about it a little bit.
It's widely use in film, movie, music video, even in the cinematic shots of big budget video games.

Matte painting has its roots in still photography. In the mid-19th century, photographers began using double-exposure techniques to composite two distinct images into one photograph. In the Victorian era, so-called spirit photography captured the imagination of the masses. In these photos, ghostly apparitions seemed to mingle with the living. They were, in reality, simple darkroom tricks, or what we now call special effects.

Computer Photoshop and digital painting change the way we do matte painting forever.
Digital matte painting, also known as matte painting, is done mostly on the computer and / or with reference pictures instead because of the ease and efficiency of doing it digitally.

It’s another technique that’s used to sell the illusion of a new reality, a place where you can’t possibly build and control in the real world, so you mix together some photos, or hand paint them entirely to fake a background.
The goal of digital matte painting is to achieve photorealistic quality backdrops using 2-D digital images and 3-D computer animation. Instead of blocking off parts of the camera lens, modern filmmakers use blue screens and green screens to replace portions of a shot with digital effects.

Digital matte painters begin with a scene description from the film's art director. It could be "the surface of planet Ooze, where yellow volcanoes gush with purple lava," or "the Roman Forum, circa 300 B.C.E." The matte painter uses this description to sketch concept art. Many matte painters go straight to Photoshop to create their concept art, while some still use paper, pencils, pastels and paint.

Digital painting tutorial process warrior woman update.

Here is another update on the little project that I am going to complete. I was indecisive mid way thru so I change her pose and did another comp. Then I took a break for a few days and I didn't think the new one fits my vision of the whole thing. So I decide to stick to the original idea...no hesitate however it might turns out to be.

Armor design concept art process warrior girl continue.

Here is a concept design process. I didn't have time to do much yet...but here it is so far. I add some more design to the torso or upper body part, huge shoulder guard, and gloves...koi tattoos design on her right arm. Here it is... :)

Then I will have to apply all these element into the final illustration or the comp see here (warlord warrior and her guard dog concept design) that I have made.

Manga drawing Video tutorial painting distance background.

Quick process from rough sketch to paint over color for storyboard, Manga, and comics. Most of the time I will start with gray scale or monotone to arrange your scene and composition, then I will paint in color rather than start off with color. I find it easier for me to focus first correct drawing and values then finally colors, just one step at the time. Also having correct values in your work will help you achieve color harmony.

Manga Tutorial how to draw comics background.

Here is another quick tutorial on how to draw, render, and color background for your Manga or comic. It's a really quick process. I find it a lot easier if you start from black and white (gray scale) to arrange your scene and composition, then apply color rather than go with the color right away. Also the mono to color approach will make you achieve color harmony within your art piece easier.

This scene is a scene of a character looking at the town from far away with the wood surrounding as mid-ground.

More creature design sketches and over all process. Step by step from sketch to a full illustration.

Here are some mean mean looking creatures and stuff. It was fun but it took a while to get to what I really wanted for the illustration.

Warlord Warrior female or girl and her Guard Dog creature concept design.
Here we go the journey continue. I am exploring other element of this illustration going to be.

At the moment I am trying to find appropriate poses
the second horrible quick comp is her two guard dogs and bat pet behind her. they are all her sidekicks.

Then I will go on and play around with the thumbnails, apply color and composition and see what it would look like. At this stage if you have more time you can be daring and experiment more with more color combinations ( Monochromatic color scheme, Analogous color scheme, Complimentary color scheme, basic and more on the idrawgirls.com blog.)
